The Big Lebowski star Jeff Bridges reveals that he’s open to reprising his role as The Dude for a sequel, but only if one condition is met. Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, The Big Lebowski was released in 1998, underperforming at the box office. In subsequent years, however, the film would go on to garner a massive cult following.
In a recent interview with People, Bridges reveals that there’s one condition that would need to be met in order for him to return for a Big Lebowski sequel. According to the actor, the Coen brothers would need to be involved. Check out Bridge’s full comment on the possibility of a sequel below:
“Oh God! If the brothers were involved, I certainly would. The brothers, they’re mysterious and full of surprises. You don’t know what they’re going to do, so since they’re surprising, I don’t think they’ll make a sequel. But like I say, they’re surprising, so maybe they’ll surprise me and make a sequel.”
Is A Big Lebowski Sequel A Good Idea?
While Bridges may be open to the idea of returning as The Dude for a sequel to The Big Lebowski, there’s a strong case to be made that the 1998 cult classic should remain a one-and-done affair. For one thing, The Big Lebowski‘s ending doesn’t really set up any further stories. The Stranger (Sam Elliott) does reveal that Maude (Julianne Moore) is pregnant, meaning The Dude will soon have a son, but that in itself isn’t strong enough to justify a follow-up movie. Plus, part of the charm of the original is the perfectly anti-climactic ending.
The Big Lebowski may have divided critics upon its release, but it has since become a beloved film, even inspiring a new lifestyle philosophy known as “Dudeism”. Even if the Coen brothers return to write, direct, and produce, any sequel still risks ruining what made the original film special. Not only that, but 2019’s The Jesus Rolls, which continues the story of John Turturro’s exuberant bowler from The Big Lebowski, was a major disappointment. It should be mentioned, however, that the Coens didn’t write or direct that film.
Although it would admittedly be interesting to see what The Dude and Walter (John Goodman) are up to more than twenty years later, any sequel to The Big Lebowski would just feel mostly unnecessary. Plus, the Coens have yet to make any sequel to any of their films, meaning there’s a slim chance they’d be interested in the idea anyway. That being said, as Bridges explains, the Coen brothers do work in surprising ways, meaning a sequel to The Big Lebowski may not be totally off the table.
